Why I'm Not A Christian - 1. Christians Are Hypocrites

June 22, 2025 – Christians Are Hypocrites

Does it matter if Christians don’t practice what they preach?  Many object to Christianity because it is filled with hypocrites.  What can we as a church do about that?

Matthew 6:1-6 |  Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 2 “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

James 1:19-27 |  19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;20 for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. 26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless.27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

About the speaker

David Dyer

Hi I'm Pastor David Dyer. I was the Vicar from August 2001 through July 2002 and then called as the Associate Pastor in June 2003 through January 2007. I am most proud of my kids who have a shared appreciation and love of all things adventuring in the outdoors. In addition, I love that my kids have a heart for caring and sharing Jesus’ love with others. My favorite part of being on the Bethlehem team is that I enjoy everyone’s different background and experience which brings a balance to our team approach to reaching the lost. 1 Corinthians 2:2, “For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you but Jesus Christ and him crucified."
