Sin as Lawlessness

Lawlessness is a state or condition, an utter disregard for God and his laws. In other words, it’s the experience of Satan’s domain. Trying to get out of this on our own, by being “autonomous” (self-law) is not the answer; so, what is?

1 John 3:1-10: | 1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. 4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. 9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

First and foremost you need to know I am a sinner who has been cleansed by the blood of Jesus. I believe my life is fully in him. I feel good about my training to be a pastor. However, my heart's desire is to simply be a servant of Christ, used by him to help people experience fullness of life in him. Sometimes I think I’m smart. Sometimes I think I’m funny. But I count all of this as a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ and being found in him. My favorite book of the Bible is Romans, and if you have to pin me down, my favorite chapter is Romans 8. Personally, I think this matters more than knowing I’m from Minnesota, or that I was graduated from Lutheran schools starting with elementary school. Curiosity might lead you to ask about my wonderful wife, Lynn, and four children, but I would probably exaggerate about their greatness and how helpful would that be? If you really want to know other positions I’ve held, honors I’ve received, etc., you can ask and I will try to remember. But when you walk away from our conversation, this is what I want you to remember about me – I am a sinner who has been cleansed by the blood of Jesus and I believe my life is fully in him. And if, in my contact with you, some of this rubs off on you, and you share the same perspective with greater conviction, I will count it a blessing.
